TESA (testicular sperm aspiration) or MESA (microscopic epididymal sperm aspiration)
Who need this treatment: TESA or MESA are procedures used to retrieve sperm when none are found in the ejaculate (this is called azoospermia). These office procedures are performed by urologists who are trained in male infertility. Men who have no or very few sperm in their ejaculate due to a blockage or complete absence of the vas deferens, which carries the sperm from the testes to the penis, will require TESA or MESA. In many cases enough sperm is retrieved after a single procedure that extra sperm can be frozen for future use.
Risks: MESA or TESA are similar to those of ICSI in general. There is a small risk of a hematoma (blood clot) formation and infection at the site of the incision, as well as a small risk of scar formation as the surgical site heals. Scar formation may decrease future sperm production, therefore, freezing sperm is highly desirable.
