About Your Care All of the Effective Treatments for Infertility Are Available at RMA Over the past 25 years there have been many important advances in reproductive medicine that are helping more couples than ever before to overcome infertility and have a baby. Depending on the infertility diagnosis, many couples are first treated with conservative options including hormone therapies to enhance fertility. In some cases, patients require more advanced procedures including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to achieve a pregnancy. The medical team at RMA specializes in treatment involving all of the most recent and effective procedures in assisted reproductive technology (ART). With IVF, the most commonly used assisted reproductive technology, a woman’s eggs are combined with a man’s sperm to achieve fertilization in the laboratory. The embryo is then transferred into the woman’s uterus where it will hopefully implant to achieve a pregnancy. Since IVF was first introduced in the 1970s, more than three million babies have been born around the world using this procedure. In addition to IVF, physicians at RMA have outstanding experience with the full range of fertility procedures that represent important options for our patients. These include: Ovulation induction – where commonly used fertility drugs are administered to stimulate a woman’s ovaries to produce eggs. Intrauterine insemination – also known as “arti-ficial insemination,” where sperm are processed then transferred directly into the woman’s uterus to improve the chances of fertilization. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) – a method of inseminating an egg during IVF, where a single sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm of the egg for fertilization. Blastocyst transfer – a technique used during IVF in which embryos are allowed to develop for additional time in the laboratory before being transferred into the uterus. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) – a procedure completed during an IVF cycle where an embryo is biopsied in an attempt to identify specific genetic characteristics that can affect the chances of having a healthy baby. PGD can be helpful for couples with certain genetic disorders, a history of multiple miscarriages, or previous treatment failures. Egg donation – for women who are unable to achieve a pregnancy using their own eggs, we are able to create an embryo using eggs provided by an anonymous donor. The embryo can then be implanted into the woman or a gestational carrier to achieve a pregnancy. Sperm donation – where sperm from a donor is used to fertilize a woman’s egg. Laparoscopy – an outpatient surgical procedure where a fiber optic camera is placed via the umbilicus (navel) to provide a direct visualization of the peritoneal cavity, ovaries, outside of the tubes and uterus. The procedure can often identify adhesions (scar tissue) or endometriosis, conditions that may cause infertility.
