Dr. Shefali Mavani Shastri was initially inspired to pursue a career in women’s health and reproductive medicine by her mother, who practiced as an OBGYN for over 30 years. Ultimately it was the cutting edge science and technology coupled with the powerful physician-patient relationship that compelled her to pursue a career in this field.
Dr. Shastri is a board certified Reproductive Endocrinologist, Obstetrician and Gynecologist, as well as Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She joined RMANJ in 2009 and leads the Somerset and Springfield offices. Dr. Shastri holds a Masters in Physiology from Georgetown University and earned her medical degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She completed both her residency and fellowship at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Center for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists and member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
Dr. Shastri has extensive experience in the field of in vitro fertilization and has a particular interest and expertise in genetic disorders, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, diminished ovarian reserve, fertility preservation and egg freezing.
Dr. Shastri is blessed to be a mother of three boys and appreciates how powerful an individual’s innate desire to start or complete their family can be.
“Through my own experience of pursuing my career before starting my own family, I understand the challenges of trying to get pregnant and empathize with what my patients go through to realize their dream of becoming parents. It’s a privilege to be part of a patient’s journey to parenthood and I find it truly humbling to be able to help a couple at such a significant time in their lives.”
Dr. Shastri is passionate about women’s health and is a strong advocate for women to take control of their reproductive health and be proactive about when and how they grow their families. She understands that times have changed and women are planning to start their families at varying time frames. Fortunately, medical technology and the opportunities for women to preserve their fertility through treatments such as egg freezing have also advanced. She believes in empowering women to make the right family planning decisions for them and expanding the opportunities available to help develop a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
